Your Wedding MC – Success or Disaster!

To ensure the success of your wedding day, one of the many decisions you need to make is who will be the emcee at your wedding reception. Perhaps your Uncle or Aunt could do it, they’ve done some speaking before. Your Uncle or Aunt may feel honoured, as this is a significant role on a most important day; but being your Wedding MC can also be a burden. There can be no mis-pronounciation of names, no personal family agendas and no embarrassing moments. Many nominated Wedding MCs attempt to calm their nerves by having just one or two, or more drinks prior; not a good strategy. So what is important about the role of Wedding MC? Any Internet search will quickly show the ‘run sheet’ and protocols of wedding receptions. This article is about those aspects of the role of Wedding MC that are not so obvious: Inter-personal Skills - A wedding is a big day, not only for you but for all your guests as well. The reception is the celebration part: relax, have fun, let’s party! A good Wedding MC monitors the energy levels of your guests by always being alert, reading body language then taking appropriate action. A Wedding MC also has to ensure their own body language, tone of voice and choice of words reflects the focus of the day – that’s you; and to celebrate. The Timekeeper – ‘Special Moments’ need to happen as specified on the run sheet. A good Wedding MC is well organised and is an important link with the venue, the DJ and the entertainers: chosen music must be played as agreed, timings must be kept. No-one wants to feel rushed or wonder if parts were missed due to timings blowing out. Polished Personal Presentation – The Wedding MC represents you; even at the end of the many hours of this day, they still have to look, and sound, good. Enthusiasm – A vital component. No matter how skilled a speaker may be if they can’t convey their enthusiasm for being there then the result will be mediocre. Clearly you would not have asked just anyone to be your Wedding MC: you hold him or her in high esteem and you think they can carry out the role. Their genuine enthusiasm and delight needs to show from the beginning to the very end and this is what the guests need and expect. Speaking Professionally – No-one expects your nominated Wedding MC to know how to speak professionally; yet to perform this role so your guests understand what’s happening certain areas must be looked at. The most common problem is speaking too fast. Ask your nominated Wedding MC to read his/her prepared speech in a much slower pace, and to do that at least ten times prior to the big day. If they need to stand and grip the lecturn, that’s okay as it is much less distracting than someone who constantly moves their body or their hands. They have to do their homework and rehearse to appear confident. Value Add - A good Wedding MC maintains the focus of the celebration and that’s you, the stars: the reason for being there. Being diplomatic and respectful are especially important. I recommend you both spend at least an hour with your nominated Wedding MC prior to the wedding (two weeks prior is recommended) to go through procedures: what should be said, what shouldn’t be said and any other quirky aspects – such as how you first met or your first kiss. Your wedding reception is unique and this personal information will make it even more so. Your special day will be memorable - for all the right reasons. A good Wedding MC is like having your personal ‘Wedding Bodyguard’. Knowing all the details are being looked after means you both get to relax and totally enjoy your own wedding reception; your guests will notice the difference too. Good luck and enjoy your big, bright and beautiful day! Victoria Rose – Best Wedding MC – 0414 805 576 – bestweddingmc@iinet.net.au
